Caroline Who?

Clinical Social Worker | Advocate for a Future Without Violence | Big City Feeler

About Me

I hold identities that are both privileged and marginalized. Due to my whiteness, however, I do not experience hardship in the same way that people of color with similar identities do. I am a white, cisgender, queer, married woman with a Masters-degree level of education. I am also neurodivergent!

My passion for mental health began during my own journey of healing and growth. Just like you, I'm a human on Planet Earth--which is to say that I know suffering personally. I also know that it's not easy to reach out for connection or help, so it is an honor that you're even visiting my site.

Fun facts: I have a perfect cat named Percy, I am from the Great Lakes region of the Midwest, and I love the band Fruit Bats.

My Education

My formal education is in the field of social work. My Bachelor of Social Work was earned at Indiana University, and my Master of Social Work from Portland State University. I'm a social worker through and through, which means I consider the influence that broad systems such as social institutions, legislation, and our environment have on our everyday lives, especially our mental health.

Being a white woman in a helping profession like social work puts me at risk of perpetuating white feminism and white saviorism. My graduate school introduced me to Tema Okun's work on White Supremacy Culture Characteristics. I consider this to be a crucial piece of my education as it helped develop my racial equity lens and deepen my reflective practice.

Core Values

Compassion

You deserve to be deeply understood. In the spirit of Dr. Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey, I'm more curious about what happened to you than what you're "getting wrong."

Equity

I strive to center inclusion and diversity in my practice. It's important to me that you feel respected in your identities with me.

Empowerment

You are the expert of your own life. I'm here to remind you of that.

Authenticity

I'll be me and you can be you. There's plenty of room for our sameness and differences. All parts are welcome!
